Fearless content serving team in Mirzapur terrified at the idea of imposing censorship on OTT platforms

By Subhash K Jha, Nov 19, 2020 – 16:45 hrs IST

The advent of movies and web series on OTT platforms without any censorship, seems to be a thing of the past. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is now going to make preparations to take action in this regard. It is being said that any content on the OTT platform will now come under the censorship guidelines of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Will have to think seriously about objectionable content on OTT platform

Web shows coming on digital platforms will have to think seriously about their objectionable content. The popular Mirzapur artist told me that there is panic in his team regarding the new censorship rules on digital platforms. “We are talking amongst ourselves about this. Our USP in Mirzapur is great content, fearless plotlines and authentic dialogues. The characters of the series speak their dialogues like real gangsters in the northern belt. They now have to severely curb their BCs and MCs. It won’t be the same anymore.”

However, a source close to the BJP government says that the OTT platform need not fear. The source added, “It is not that overnight they will be asked to change their objectionable content. A digital platform is basically a platform where a filmmaker can show whatever he wants to show. Whereas in cinema he does not have this freedom.

Veteran lyricist media commentator Amit Khanna feels there is no need for digital filmmakers to panic. “Nothing will change at the moment. The notification is only about the change in business rules, which means that the digital content, which was currently being administered by the IT ministry, will now be handled by the I&B ministry. This is really cool because Content and Platform are two different entities. According to the government’s statement in the Supreme Court, there will be self-regulation in online content.”
